How do we pick the right breast implant for you? To ensure you get the best possible outcome of your breast augmentation surgery we consider both your anatomy and your desired outcome.

Anatomically, your chest width as well as the amount of skin you have are the most important factors.  A breast implant needs to fill the width of your breast properly.  Then we need to ensure that there is enough skin to fit the implant (in cases of very small breasts) or that the implant is big enough to fill out the skin (in cases of deflated or droopier breasts).  Sometimes if there is too much skin you may need to consider a lift in addition to your breast augmentation where the excess skin is removed.

This gives us a starting point of what implants may be a good fit, but then we need to consider what your goals are!  Breast implants that fit the same width can come in different projections, meaning the amount of volume that fills the breast in the forward direction.  Lower projecting breast implants (low and moderate projection) tend to give a leaner and more athletic look, whereas full and extra-full projecting breast implants can result in a more voluptuous appearance with more upper pole fullness.  It is possible to have natural and proportionate looking breast augmentation with all different types projections provided they are fitted properly to your anatomy.

Other considerations include things such as the thickness of your tissues as they drape over the implant and your overall body – the same set of breast implants can look very different in someone that is 5’1 compared to someone that is 5’7.  It is also important to communicate your goals with your plastic surgeon – don’t be shy about what you really want!  I find “inspiration” pictures are great for this.  Even though we can never guarantee your results will be the same as someone else’s, I find these are a great communication tool as not everyone has the same definition of “full” or “natural”.  And a knowledgeable plastic surgeon can help guide you to get the breast augmentation result closest to what you want while taking into account your own individual anatomy.
